1986

Major changes to the English Department’s writing curricula were announced or confirmed in this year. The University Council finally voted to officially remove E 346K as a university-wide requirement. The English Department announced that the only required writing course (E 306) would become a “remedial” course for the next two years and would no longer be offered on campus by 1988. The English Department also announced the development of several advanced lower-division writing courses (E 309) that would help students improve their writing skills beyond E 306. The Freshman English Policy Committee, after years of being chaired by a rhetoric and writing faculty member, was given a new chair (Lance Bertelson) whose primary research was eighteenth-century literature. Finally, a new summer program (PREVIEW), featuring E 306, was created to help at-risk students acclimate to college life.
