1982
The English Department develops four discipline-specific E 346K syllabi. There is significant disagreement within the department over the purpose and philosophy of the E 306 course. The department continues to study the role of lecturers, while at the same time working to clarify teaching load expectations for faculty of all ranks. For the first time the English Department votes to limit the number of “long” semesters that lecturers can teach. Declining budgets and increasing enrollments are used as justifications not to reduce lecturer teaching loads. James Sledd is unhappy about the new general education English requirements and aggressively confronts various university administrators about the process through which the requirements were passed, and the information used to justify the requirements. Lecturers are frustrated with their work loads, last minute hiring, and having their professional fates tied to student evaluations. The Association of Graduate Students in English (AGSE) also begins to complain about workload and compensation issues. John Ruszkiewicz proposes a new version of E 306.
